    Description

    Octavian silver quinarius, R.I.C. 276, RSC 14. Octavian was born 63 B.C., and was the grand-nephew of Julius Caesar, who adopted him as his heir prior to his death. He became Augustus in 28-29 B.C. time frame, the transition time from Republic to Imperial. The obverse shows a right facing portrait of Octavian. At the left side is obverse legend "CAESAR (IMP VII)". The reverse shows the legend "ASIA RECPTA", with Victory standing left on Cista Mystica, flanked by two snakes. The quinarius is approx. 13 mm.The piece is a toned, aged silver color, with a couple of minor surface contact marks.This small silver ancient coin was purchased at the Mid-Winter ANA Convention in Atlanta in the late 1980's from Empire Coins.
