    Description

Julius Caesar 47-46 BC Silver Denarius NGC XF Venus In amazing detail PQ.
    49-44 BC
    Silver Denarius. 3.81g 18.9mm
MINTED: Military mint travelling with Caesar in Spain, late 46-early 45 BC NGC XF Strike 5/5 Surface 3/5
OBVERSE: Head of Venus right, wearing stephane, hair tied back in knot.
REVERSE: Aeneas walking left, carrying Anchises on his shoulder holding the Palladium. CAESAR in exergue at bottom.
Lovely old collection toning with hints of iridescence around the head of Venus. Beautiful and colorful toning on both sides in plain sight. Reverse dies slightly worn, but devices virtually complete and the name of "CAESAR" clear and fully on-flan.
Issued by a travelling mint accompanying Caesar in Spain during his last military campaign. The campaign would end with Caesar's triumph over the Republican forces led by Gnaeus Pompey and Titus Labienus.
A silver denarius of 48 to 46 B.C. celebrates Caesar’s illustrious ancestry from the goddess Venus (on the obverse) and the mythological founder Aeneas (on the reverse) carrying his father away from burning Troy. As one version of Rome’s foundation mythology was recorded, Aeneas went on to found Rome and the Gens Julia, the family of Julius Caesar.
