    Description

Program (3 ¾” by 4 ¾” closed) for an athletic competition hosted by the Yale Athletic Association in New Haven, Connecticut, printed by T.M. & T. and dated 1884. The text on the front of the program reads Sixth Winter Meeting of the Yale Athletic Association, Third Day in the Gymnasium, Wednesday, March 12
    th
, 1884. There’s a list of the officers (all students with one alumnus), the referee (H.H. Knapp), the judges (R.W. Hamill, H.C. McDowell), and the timer (N.G. Williams). The inside pages list off the different competitions: Tug of War, Horizontal Bar, Running High Jump, Final Feather Weight Sparring, Light Weight Sparring, Rope Climbing, Heavy Weight Sparring, Parallel Bars, Final Light Weight Sparring, Club Swinging, and Heavy Tug of War. Someone has penciled in the results of the competitions and added, at the top of the second page, another competition: Light Wt. Wrestling, Won by Warnock, 86 S. A line on the bottom and the back page have advertising for the New Haven jeweler George H. Ford, who furnished the program and also manufactured and sold medals and ribbons for college sports. This came out of a scrapbook belonging to J. Arthur Atwood of Wauregan, Connecticut, while a student at Yale University in the mid 1880s. The program card is in good condition with light wear and soiling. Nice early Yale College sports related item!
